Christmas Break

I am always so excited when the kids are home for break. Those first few days are lovely. No running back and forth to school, no volunteering, packing lunches, running, running, running.. and then the reality is.. the running doesn't stop! This season has been unusually nutty due to school. The session didn't end until Dec. 18 and then I still had to check daily ( I was worried) for my grade. So my brain didn't go on Christmas break that first week. Greg's parents came Dec 20 (not the 21st) but that is a whole other story of how both Greg and I can't read. I still had work, though Greg is taking two weeks of vacation. It amazes me how we think we will get so much done, but the plain truth is, we have gotten a fraction done of what we planned and just have to let it go! The kids have 4 adults to entertain them and have consistently needed constant interaction. Today I am pushing for more independent play.

Anyway, the holiday... I was home this year!! And I found true delight staying up Christmas Eve, wrapping presents, getting Santa's milk and cookies ready, and stare at my tree while cuddled up with Greg. The kids are old enough to really get into it this year and it was so much fun. Ryan was up on Christmas morning at 0530. I held him off until 0645. Charlotte insisted she heard reindeer feet on the roof Christmas Eve. So presents were opened and the kids had a ball. 99% of the stuff was perfect. Ryan has since spent many hours building his Lego sets! Charlotte loved her wooden animals and carried her nesting dolls around for 2 days. There wasn't much commercial stuff--which I was very thankful for and I don't think anything takes batteries. The kids have played with about half of what they have gotten, and the rest is waiting quietly in a pile by the couch. I bought a kaleidoscope for Charlotte that is just beautiful and a prism for her window--more rainbows! There were several Usborne books that are great and the kids each got a giftcard for Barnes and Noble from the grandparents--but even better--Mom said they could buy whatever they wanted with them--the only caveat for Ryan is that he has to pick stuff he can read to me. So he picked a Transformers book, which he has since decided is too old for him. But the others are great. He actually had picked out too many books and had to put some back! Beth and Lori got him the Magic treehouse books on CD--totally cool--he loves listening to books on CD during quiet time and they are great in the car. Charlotte got a Tinkerbell play set--but of all the Disney stuff that she can glom on to--the princesses continue to be a favorite, at least Tinkerbell is constructive and is seen using her brain!

We had Christmas with the Gauls on the 21st and with the Hollenbaugh's the 27th. Janet and Steve came down from Michigan the 27th as well and stayed overnight. We had a yummy breakfast at Mimi's Cafe before I had to go to bed and get ready for work again! There will be pictures forthcoming. I am home now until Friday. I am glad for the break.

Oh, Christmas Tree

So, today was a day I looked forward to all week. The bulk of a large paper was done, I was to leave work early last night and spend the day putting up Christmas. My school schedule has really put a dent in my free time--so no Christmas decorations are up yet. Well..best laid plans. I ended up staying thru the night at work, slept 4 (a half) hours according to Greg. We then headed out to Meijer to get tree stuff. I have never had a real tree. I am supposed to say real as opposed to live, I guess, since there is no root ball. This is a sore point for me. I ultimately want a live tree that I can plant in the spring. Since our yard has enough trees, I will wait and do that at the next house. For now I try to ease the guilt with plans of recycling the tree. So we went to a lot and picked a great tree. It was so fun going through them. Really tall ones, squat ones. I took great delight in finding one. Greg and I agreed on one as the kids ran around the field. A big open space is all it takes to keep them happy! The guys there trimmed the bottom, netted it, put it in our stand and loaded it. We cleared a space at home and brought it in. I now understand the term, "trim a treee". I did eventually trim part of it--unfortunately I realized I could do this after I had put the lights on--so a strand of lights got trimmed too. Oops. So it is majestic and magnificent and has plenty of water. I love it!!!!!

Ryan found one too, about 2 feet tall--it's adorable. The Thomas the Tank Christmas ornaments are now on it along with a strand of blue lights he picked out. The high point for him though, was picking out the star for it. He was quite dismayed I wouldn't put a star on our tree. Ours is topped with a Boyd Bear topper from Megan. It will always top the tree. So Ryan has one of his own. He named his tree too..it's Thomas.

Quotes of the day--yesterday

"Mommy, do we celebrate Hannukah?"--Charlotte

"For God's sake!"--Ryan

"Oops, I forgot Grandma and Grandpa!"--Ryan

"Mommy, you're right"--Ryan

Keep in mind, we have had no discussions about Hannukah here.

I nearly fell over when I heard my words coming out of Ryan's mouth that way! Oops.

And Ryan said the grandma and grandpa comment in the car on the way to gymnastics--he had starting making up and singing on the spot a Christmas carol about the things he loved in the car--toys, and all of us made the list.

The last was made at Target yesterday. I had told the children that I would not be buying any toys that day. Ryan spotted a copy of "The Pirates who don't do anything" DVD. And really wanted it. I very nearly gave in. But it was $20 and we are watchng our pennies until payday so I had to tell him no--it was very hard. But then he said what he said--very grown up and solemn. And he was fine. He is growing up and breaking my heart:)

Ode to the blue Minivan

Oh, blue Honda Odysseys
You do zoom about,
Carrying precious cargo
You zip in, drop off, zip out.
There are so many of you
Out and around
Why did Honda make so many
To stand out in a crowd?
Everywhere I go
A Honda can be seen
But only the one
I want to see
Is far away
From me.

Final weeks of class

I am in week 6 of 8 in my nursing research class. It is by far the hardest class I have taken. A large amount of information to read and digest and write about in a coherent manner. I guess this is what the masters is all about. I am very much looking forward to the Christmas break! I had to keep the pace up over the Thanksgiving holiday which really sucked. The instructor takes several days to get back on grades so I chew my nails (figuratively) and try to realx--what's done is done. I will be quite happy to pass with a B. I never thougth I would say that, but it's true. Some of the nurses in class hold admin positions so they are somewhat familiar with processes and know what to write. I am stumbling along as a staff nurse and often feel as if I am treading water.
Anyway.
Janet and Steve made the drive down last Saturday and stayed thru dinner and a visit after. They were in good spirits and like most of us, quite busy. Promises were made to come down for the Christmas holiday. I can look forward to that and reading whatever I want over the holiday break! Greg's folks are flying out as well and I am watching the days fly by. We don't have our twinkle lights up or Christmas stuff out. There aren't enough hours in the day!
I also saw Twilight with a bunch of friends from work and AJ. The book was better, as I suppose it often is. I can't get shmoozy over the actor that plays Edward--I'll still take Matthew McConaughey! The actress playing Bella spends most of her time looking bereft, concerned, confused..whch she is very good at and they all look the same. Jasper looked like Edward Scissorhands. All in all a decent start, we'll see if they hit their stride in the next one.

I am compiling the list of books I want to read from the library. I had a few in my hand at the bookstore and put them back--hard to do, but I don't think I'll re-read them soon and we have enough.

We all have runny noses, but thankfully, nothing worse.

Happy Belated Thanksgiving!

My friend Megan and I worked the Thanlksgiving holiday, she worked days, I worked nights. She hosted dinner today and it was delicious! Her folks came down and a friend from her Air Force Museum days came as well. I napped after eating, the combination of sleep deprivation and stuffing myself really did take the wind out of my sails!
Work was good in that I got to work with my friends which is always comforting and usually alot of fun. It is times like these that I realize how much I will miss everyone when I do eventually leave. I know the routines, I know where everything is and the people I have gotten to know are like another family. Well, I won't be leaving soon but that it is on the horizon makes me a little sad. One thing I will not miss is how nights gets shafted. No food last night...none. Cafeteria wasn't open (nothing new), no box lunches and bonus, all the restaurants are closed. Luckily our registrar brought in a huge amount of leftovers. But, really, it still sucked.
Today was Black Friday and since I was close to Toys R Us I thought I would wander down after work to see if any of the Legos were marked down. No luck there, but seeing the nutball crowds was a hoot. I'm not in the market for a new TV or washer and dryer, so none of the sales meant alot to me. I don't want plastic junk toys. Ryan so far has been easy to buy for. Charlotte is the one that is tough. She likes Disney princess but I don't want an overabundance of that stuff. She loves her stuffed animals--but does she really need more? and the Polly pockets are here and there and annoying. Too young for Wii...I want to get her a light bright..do they still make those?

Time to knuckle under and write my paper.

P.S. I have been almenting that my Aunt Jeanette has been out of touch for several months. She called yesterday. She and Steve are down for a visit tomorrow:)

What's new and exciting

It has been too long since I have added anything to this board. School has kicked into high gear and this week will be an interesting mix of work, relaxation, friends and cramming in a lit review for my research class due Sunday. The kids have school today and tomorrow. Greg is off starting Wednesday. I hope they have a nice Thanksgiving home--I will be at work! We go to the Gauls Friday--I am very much looking forward to good company and good food.
We have started getting a thing here and there for Christmas--I absolutely cannot believe the decorations have been up in the stores for so long already. Thanksgiving is just getting plowed over. We really have so much to be thankful for. We have dialed down presents this year, I am reminded todo ths every time I go into the kids rooms to move a pile of stuff.
Ryan has expressed an interest in Harry Potter--we will start reading him Book 1. He still loves Magic treehouse. I guess Wendy's had some of the books on CD as part of their kids meals. Megan gave me their Pirates Past Noon and Ryan listens to it at least 5 times a day ( and we do too since it's on the boombox in the living room)! We put an Ikea bookshelf by his bed and that has kept his bed clear of the many books he looks through.
Charlotte gave Ryan her legos. She is still fascianted with my dollhouse and every day I walk into our bedroom to find new configurations of furniture on the floor with the people arranged. She is attached to something everyday. Today it is a puppy she took to school. She still sleeps with her Darby doll every night (Ryan has started asking for Kim, his teddy, at night too.). Last night I was up way too late and found both kids in the bed with Greg, sleeping feet to head. It was hilarious. They managed not to wound each other I guess. I took my pillows and slept in Ryan's room. The glow in the dark paint is quite cool and I fit on his twin bed:)
Charlotte continues to thrive at the AS.
I think Ryan misses playdates. It is impossible to set them up with the kids at the primary. No phone numbers, no directory. He doesn't like the kids next door (I don't either). Luckily he gets along with his sister. We are working on a playdate with Carter (his friend from Antioch) after the holiday.

Time for pick-up!

No longer hooked

For the last several weeks, my coffee has not come out right. I don't know why. I'm not doing anything different. I've tried different beans. I ultimately take a few sips of the stuff and pitch the rest. It took me awhile to realize I was doing this and then a little longer to figure out I was making coffee as a compulsion, a habit. I wasn't even drinking it. The bean grinder and the press have been cleaned and stored away. Yesterday I switched to tea. I found a soothing caffeine free blend that allows me to have something warm when I crave it, early morning and mid afternoon. As a result I have been weaned off caffeine--at least hefty doses of it. I still get the occasional hot chocolate from Starbucks. So, tonight when I needed to get my post done for school, I could not afford to fall into bed at 10 like I have for the last 2 nights. I went to Starbucks and got a tall misto-half coffee, half milk. It's 1230 am and I am still totally awake! I am reading next week's homework, I called greg's parents (they're on Cali time). So I thought it was worth writing about. Charlotte mentioned going decaf awhile back and the n switching to caffeine when I needed a boost--boy, does it ever work!

So maybe my body said it had had enough coffee. That's cool. It took my brain a little longer to let go--but the transition seems to be going smoothly. So, no more lattes or mochas--they don't even sound good. My wallet and waistline should thank me.

Walking better

Woke up sore, took my ibuprofen and put on the walking boot. By noon, I was out of the boot and while I am still a little stiff, I am able to ambulate pretty well. Spent the afternoon wondering why we haven't chopped all of our trees down yet--yes, I was gathering leaves into about 20 bags before it started to rain. Snow is predicted this weekend.

People often ask how I manage everything--kids, work, school, home--truth is, some things slide--mostly the house and some play time with the kids--which I hate. Being home for a full 4 days with a slightly sick kid to boot did out things in perspective. They are alot of fun when you slow down and take a minute.

Ryan had a good day today. The gym teacher emailed back, and with further discussion with Ryan I learned that he had not been asked to sit out, another child had. So it was someting he saw that made him sad.

Charlotte was noted to have more energy at school today by her teacher. She was definitely tired by 7 though. I love watching her with the other kids. How they ride together on the trikes and just run. There is so much laughter outside. the wind blows the leaves down and the kids are building and playing games and running. Some of the nursery kids are trying out the unicylcles, Charlotte likes the trikes, rollerblades and a whirly ride. I'll have to post a picture sometime. She's pretty good at it. She's so confident. One of the things I love about the school is how confident the kids are.

A box of books came for the kids today from Grandma and Grandpa as did a compass. Ryan was wearing it tonight and he drew a compass rose on a picture he was making. The kids talk about wanting to see their grandparents alot and for some reason, Charlotte keeps asking questions about Grandma Pat. It seems like she is trying to organize family and friends. Alot of her questions center around that.

Addendum

And I am a klutz. While blowing leaves today, I turned my foot again. It's the right one, like before and yea, it hurts. Alot. I can bear weight-barely. Nothing poking out. Took 800mg of ibuprofen and got my walking boot out. Remember, the one I had before when I did the SAME FREAKING THING!
Greg wants me to call Dr. Nanda. I don't know why. Nothing's broken and I already have the really cool walking boot and plenty of pain meds. We'll see tomorrow. I am such a klutz.

Events of the Day

Charlotte slept well last night. Lots of coughing in the first part of the night, then I guess the Claritin kicked in because she slept soundly. She was in bed with us, so I got little rest until she settled.

Today we went to IKEA, they were having a sale--of course. Unfortunately, I showed up at 1013 and they were SOLD OUT of the table and chair set I wanted. 275 sets in 13 minutes! Oh well. Still got to meander, get lots of ideas and eat in the cafeteria. I kept Charlotte with me today, she'll go back to school tomorrow. Still no fever.

Just for fun I looked at Ryan's tonsils--swollen, and at mine, left one swollen--I did have alot of ear and left sided throat pain last week. Called the doc , he left antibiotics up to me. Neither of us is symptomatic, no cough fever, nothing, so I'll wait. Fortunately our FP either trusts my assessment or he's just cool. He didn't make me bring Charlotte in, just called in her antibiotics.

Cute neat thing of the day: I take off my rings, for hand washing, dishes, hair gunk and lotion. they have been off for about 3 days. Today, since I was venturing out in public I thought I would wear them. Checked the bathroom-not there. Checked the nightstand-not there. Checked the kitchen, den and pants pockets-no go. Called Greg, just in case he put them away--not likely, he would just give them back I'm sure. He didn't know where they were but suggested i ask Charlotte. I was planning on this anyway. The kid loves my jewelry. "Charlotte, do you know where Mommy's rings are?"

"Yes, Mommy. I'll show you just where." she replies. I am expecting them in some treasure box in her room. No, wrong again. She walks into my room, to my jewelry box. "Here they are Mom. I saw you left them in the bathroom, so I picked them up and put them in your jewelry box, there there and there." And sure enough, the rings were quashed into the ring holder in my jewelry box. I am happy my rings are safe and tickled shitless that she did that. Smart kid!!!:)

Time to pull her out of the tub. Ryan is at Scouts.

Headcold

Charlotte has a cold. A like her mother, a simple cold is not a simple cold. Mine go to my throat and stay--for days. I lose my voice about twice a year. Charlotte's colds go to her throat too and she ends up with croup. So today she is home, raspy, congested and with a slight barky cough. Cough medicine isn't recommneded for kiddos now and I really just want her to drain and dry out anyway. I'll see if the Claritin cuts the phlegm. The worst time is night. I don't sleep well when I know she is croupy--the cool mist humidifier goes full blast in her room. One panicked trip to the ER was enough. So we'll see about work tonight. I already kept her home from school today, and may tomorrow as well which means no sleep for me if I work. Chris at school said the cough was going around--great.

We had a restful weekend home--Madagascar 2 wasn't as good as the first, but the kids enjoyed the trip to the movies. We had free passes from a previous trip but the concessions ended up being $25. Need to rethink that one.

Another email to school. Ryan is being told to sit out in gym. Need to find out why. He takes things so hard.

Time to go push fluids on Charlotte.

Sunday-we changed a tire among other things

Well, it's offically Monday, but it's dark out, so I'll call it Sunday. The weekend vortex of activities is done. Yesterday was swim, a baby shower, a birthday party and a potluck. Today was train show a birthday party, and a movie. The shower was for Charlotte and her boy. She got gobs of soft adorable clothes--so small (sigh). Charlotte Ryan and Kristin went to Amelie's 5th birthday party, she is in the nursery class with Charlotte. Finally, the potluck at AJs which was totally great--good food good friends and incredibe weather. Ryan, as always was sad when the good times had to end:(

The train show was a big one out at Hara. They don't take plastic at the door so we went to the ATM down the street. While leaving, we hit a curb. I asked Greg to check the tire and sure enough, it was flat. If it had to happen at all, today was the perfect day. We had nowhere really pressing to be and the weather was great. I just imagned doing this in the rain or snow--yuck. Anyway, it was an adventure as the children got to watch and help change the tire. Small aside, if you own a vehicle with the spare attached to the back of the car, check the cover. The three zipper pulls that held ours shut were corroded and broke off in our hands. Of course, neither Greg nor I had a knife--one is going in the glove box now--I wandered acrtoss the parking lot to a Jo-Anns (maybe they had an exacto knife) when Greg called. He had to tear the cover off. So the tire was changed, we saw lots of train displays and went on to Kaylynn's party at the Y. The kids loved being in the pool and it was so wonderfully warm. The children were not shy about attaching to an adult in the pool to be tugged around or bounced. They were quite ingenious getting us (Reagan and I) to float while they carried us. They were a delight, as usual:) My quest to keep dry hair was quite a failure.
We then went to BD's--haven't been there in forever. Greg took Charlotte for ice cream while Charlotte D, Kaylynn, Ryan and I went to High School Musical 3. The other 3 have seen the first 2, I couldn't make myself watch. I suppose I will have to go back and do so. Number 3 was good--a modern Grease in that it was high school and they broke into song alot. But the acting was smooth and I can see the draw for families wanting a clean, sweet film with some great music and the dancers were amazing. Going with Ryan was a treat--we got to discuss what previews we like and what movies we'd like to see next.
Charlotte and the girls are on their way back to NC tomorrow--the kids will be sad. It was nice having back down the street for a few days, it's not the same here with them gone.

Questions of the week

These just have to be written down. I nearly laughed off the road when Charlotte asked me, "why do we have cheeks?" And a couple of days ago she wanted to know why we have eyelids. Answers to question 1, to keep our food in our mouths and to smile. Question 2, to protect our eyeballs. All of these were asked in the car.

And tonight, she found a Snoopy rubber-like toy that Deb Sizemore gave me (she knows I like Peanuts). So Charlotte was all excited that she had found this--somewhere in the bowels of our toy pit--and she was happy to give it to me since she knows I like Snoopy too. then she asked if it could be her toy. I said that it was really my toy, but she could borrow it. Her reply, "Well Mom, since you're not a kid anymore, maybe I should have it." OMG--too flipping funny and amazing.

Giggling

Ryan doesn't have school tomorrow, so tonight he was able to stay up past his usual bedtime and watch Madagascar. We've never seen it. Well, Ryan thought it was hilarious. He giggled through most of it and even said at one point he was giggling so much it was making him pee! Listening to that silly giggle, of course made us laugh. Ryan ultimately was funnier than the movie, though the movie was cute. I wonder if part 2 will be as funny?

APA is evil

Most, if not all of you have college degress and know what APA is. For me, it is a horrible horrible bane. Neck aching, shoulder torquing, mind numbing pain! I am sitting on the edge of an A in my recent class-have worked my butt off learning downright obscure theories (and writing about them) and all the points I have lost (5 total) have been for APA!!!!! AAAGGGHH!!! So, I am looking at APA software since me in manual mode isn't cutting it. I wonder if they have a conference every year to discuss random changes to cause the most turmoil.
So I am taking suggestions. I am looking at PERRLA right now, but will definitely need to decide by next week. My next course is available for review tomorrow with the first post due Monday. This one is nursing research. Wahoo! The twisted thing is, I kind of liked the theory and will probably like research too. I've often wondered if I hadn't been cornered into nursing if I would have ever graduated...I like school too much (sigh).

Oh, almost forgot...Mr. Pratt will be out tomorrow to install the fictures in the bathroom downstairs. HOORAY!! Now if I can get Greg to finish the baseboards....I imagine he'll finish that project when I finish one of mine:)

Surfaced

Ah, Sunday. A day off. Greg and the kids kept busy. I literally spent 6 hours holed up in the den writing an 8 page paper on two nursing theorists. But it is done. The APA check took nearly as long as the paper--I do it myself, I still haven't looked into a program for it. The kink in my shoulder is still there. On the plus side, Greg was great about keeping the kids out of my hair. So I surfaced at 3:30 and realized I hadn't been outside. Went out, Ryan requested a leaf pile. It was small, the trees are still holding massive amounts of leaves. We have a million acorns. I mean really, many many many acorns. If they all sprout tress we'll have to move. I don't even know how I will get them allout of the grass. Anyway.

Ryan did his homework tonight. The desk we bought him ages ago, the one in my room until this afternoon that I used for my makeup (it's a kid-sized desk and I used it whenever I put on my make-up--picture that!) is now back in his room per his request, so he can do his "practice homework." I pulled out Everything Your First Grader shoudl know and started thumbing through it. I wanted to find something for him to read to me. We found a section on rhyming. I said a word and he came up with one that rhymed..he asked to do it again and again so he could come up with different words. He read some nursery rhymes and wanted to keep going. I am always tickled when he does that. Charlotte recites the rhymes from memory--I asked Ryan to read Old King Cole and Charlotte spouted it off-word perfect. Had no clue she knew that. Greg wasn't surprised. He said we've been reading them to her for awhile. Where have I been?

Ah! Almost forgot. Greg and the kids surprised me with a birthday cake today. Yes, my bday was 2 weeks ago, but we never got our own cake. Greg and the kids made it while I was contructing sentences containing the words "expanding consciousness, angular view and noetic loci" If you want to know what they mean, come with me to school! It was a delightful surprise.

Soccer season is done. Swim for Ryan starts. Charlotte starts her dance class on the 27th. So we get a little breather.

Pretty Day/ I am not super mom

Yet another perfect fall day--can it stay like this forever? Got kids to school. Went to grocers--the Kroger in Bcreek has a Starbuck's and I wasn't going to get a coffee, but the salted caramel hot chocolate was worth trying. It is now my new favorite. It may bump the caramel latte from Panera. Debated- homework, clean bathrooms. STOP! It's a gorgeous day. Packed lunch and Charlotte and I had a picnic at school. I spread out the blanket under a tree, the sun was just right. The blanket was a magnet for a couple of kids, Ella came and sat on my lap. After the young ones went in, Charlotte ate and we chatted. I laid on my side and Charlotte crawled over leaned against me like a couch. She was lucky I didn't take a nap, though I nearly suggested we curl up. But, before I could say anything, it was off to the swings. Bathrooms be damned.

We are reading Halloween themed books now. The current favorite being the Bones of Fred McFee--not too scary and it rhymes. I found a copy of the Legend of Sleepy Hollow and Ichabod in this version is a bit smarmy--need to find a different version.
I bought Ryan the first four Magic treehouse books today--he is very excited about chapter books. We are reading the first one together--the fourth one is pirates and that is the one he reads "by himself". I want to read them in order. The first one is about dinosaurs.

Charlotte made the letter A out of her pencils and called me over to look. I pulled out the wooden shapes in the Handwriting Without Tears stuff so she could make others if she wanted. The tempest reared her head a couple of times today. After being admonished about being sassy to Mommy at bedtime, she cried her heart out. I asked why she was sad--I told her I wasn't upset and she understood that. So I asked why she was sad and she howled she missed her friend Kristin in North Carolina. It about broke my heart. What goes on in that brain of hers.? So I'll ask tomorrow if she would like to talk to Kristin and see where it goes.

Ryan is back to drawing big pictures again, I'm so glad. I was worried he would drop that after not being in Brian's class for awhile--but he's back at it. Today it was pirate ships with people with names and a story. I asked if he wanted to draw one for Kaylynn and he lept at it. The one he was drawing was a pirate ship sinking because Kaylynn and Ryan shot it (they were full of bad guys). I asked him to draw something happy and then realized that I was being dumb. I encouraged him to draw whatever he wanted. Hopefully Kaylynn will understand. He did change it though. I am sorry he did, after thinking about it, censoring him was a dumb thing to do. He also wrote Kaylynn a note, remebered his "finger spaces" and stamped the envelope. It goes in the mail tomorrow.

Sunday- a day for the drama queen

It's official, at 3 we have to turn her off. I mean, really, she just gets fried. Quiet Sunday today. I went to Williams-sonoma to get my BD gift--thanks AJ, for the gift card!! And when I got home, we loaded the crew and bikes for a ride down at Carillon. Absolutely gorgeous--this is why we live in Ohio day. So when she gets fried, she gets pissy--awful word, but there's no other word for it. There are tears, pouting, boo=boo lip and dark looks under eyebrows. And everything sets her off. Mental note: cannot skip quiet time even if they have played quietly most of the day. Also need to consult child rearing information. I'm sure this is normal, she's probably even normal, but I need sage advice so I can appreciate what she is going through--I am sure the trauma of existing as a four year old is somewhat taxing--I really don't remember. But she is a handful when like this and so far the answer is quiet time in her room.
We get drama ot of Ryan too. We are getting more resistance if our plans don't mesh with his, because, as you know, the world revolves around him....

He read "Are you my mother" out loud in the car and was thrilled, mostly by the number of pages he read. He spelled out the words he didn't know--about a half dozen, but did great! Newest thing learned, "Trick or treat, smell my feet, give me something good to eat, if you don't, I don't care, i'll pull down your underwear." Charming isn't it?

Pop

I miss you.
Today, my birthday, I am missing you keenly.
I didn't think it would be that way.
On my birthday, I was your center.
Now you are gone and I am a satellite around others, a center for no one.
I miss that precious feeling of being the center
I grieve knowing I will never have that feeling again.
I miss being someone's child.
I miss you.

So, it was 10:30. That's the time I rolled out of bed. I woke up once before, smiled gleefully, rearranged blankets and went back to sleep. Woke up, went to Panera where I got the last egg breakfast sandwich, my caramel latte and read (and finished) a book in 2 hours. Off to Trader Joe's. I actually did touch the to do list. All of the summer clothes are packed away. I have to sort thru the clean stuff and see what else needs to go. I can see my bedroom floor again. I then read (and finished) another book. Greg phoned briefly (battery running low) and said Ryan was having a blast--something about a BB gun and that Charlotte was being a good sport. It's an absolutely beautiful weekend to be camping.
Greg bought a camp stove and we have quickly realized our backpacking equiment is insufficient for family camping. We will be visiting the Campmor site soon. General Surplus going out of business hasn't helped and Dick's is somewhat lacking in the camping dept.
I wouldn't mind seeing Birch especially with it being so nice out, but being home has been beneficial:)

I'm Home Alone?

Yes, indeed. It's dark outside and Greg and the little ones are at Camp Birch for the Weekend Family Fun Campout with scouts. I work Sat and Sun so no go for me. I worked last night and was up for a P/T conference at the Antioch School. Greg was running thru his lists for stuff to pack, but rememebred to ask what I would do with my night home alone. Me? Home alone? I hadn't really considered it. Hmmm. what to do. Thai, Indian? I opted for a steak dinner (Longhorn) and looking for shoes. I really wanted a good steak--Texas Roadhouse opens Oct 13. I could go alone or take a buddy. All my buddies have kids, and plans...Megan, however, was eager for a night out too. So after an excellent and overly filling dinner --no room for fried cheesecake (darn!) we went looking for shoes. No luck for me. Most retailers haven't picked up the whole size 12 issue yet, but it was fun to look.
Ryan was really jazzed about spending all day and 2 nights. I can't wait to hear the stories.
So the to do list has a few things on it. I do have a stack of library books I can read (a smidgen of homework) and Greg rented Ironman. I'll see how I feel in the morning. Will it be a pitter around day or a I will move a small mountian day? Dunno. Greg was happy i would have time to myself, I'm glad he appreciates how I need it and doesn't begrudge me the time. I wonder what time I'll wake up tomorrow? :)

Stress

Today I had that feeling...the "I am going to cry from stress" or "start shrieking" from stress moments. It lasted most of the day. Thursday I was up at 8, ferried children, no nap and went to work. Home at 0730 Fri morning with no sleep (up for 23.5 hours). Slept until 145p, picked up kids, and worked Fri night (slept 6 h 15m). I was in charge, it was a very busy, stressful (read, nearly awful) night, with much too much going on and not enough staff. Slept all Sat morning and part of afternoon. Went to bed at 2am after homework. I finally emailed my prof Friday and requested an extension for my 6 page paper due today. I simply wasn't going to be able to do it. I hated having to ask and stressed about her response. Today I just wanted to drink my coffee, be a slug and read for awhile. The kids wanted to play with mom, climb on mom, talk to mom--and I felt myself starting to unravel. I just wanted to be left alone--for a little while. Greg didn't get it, thought I was being moody and selfish. I wanted to scream, I actually felt panicked. And greg didn't understand at all. I figure I am up 24 hours straight once a week. That can't be good. I am still trying to calm down. I am home for the next 2 days and part of Wednesday. I'll have a little time to myself. It will pass, but God what an awful feeling.

WE HAVE POWER WE HAVE POWER

Between 145 and 4445 this afternoon, the power came back on. I nearly cried--really. Today is Day 6 without power. I left to pick up children and came home to a working post light. Every light in the house has been turned on. The washer is going. OMG what a relief. Ryan wrote a note to his teacher about the power coming back on. It's adorable--I'm framing it.

THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU AJ, Megan and Mrs. Dungan for a hot meal. Thank you Megan and Charlotte for letting us use your (hot) shower and home theater. The harderst thing really was accepting help from others--weird, I know--we are so used to giving, taking was harder than I imagined.

I'm sure at some point I will post more about the difficulties and delights (yes, there were a few). But for now, I am just happy.

Hugs,
Sara

Soccer practice

Today was Charlotte's first practice. Yes, she looked adorable in her shin guards and pink and black cleats. She is on a 3-5 age team and they are a hoot. The shine of practice wore off about 20 minutes into it. It was also about 90 degrees out. I held her hand and ran with her during most of the drills. Ryan wanted to be Coach James' assistant. Coach James was quite cool about this. Ryan was on his team before and moved up since he turned 6. So as the days get cooler, we'll see how it goes.

Two good things happened today, Austin came by to get Ryan and they went to the bus stop together--totally great for Ryan. I was also able to pick him up after school. We were home at 3:20. With the kindergartners being bussed form a different school and all of those logistics, Ryan had been getting home near 4. He much preferred riding home in an air conditioned car with snacks ans I liked not having to wait so long to see him.

Ryan is bringing home math homework and his completed writing assignements. I am keeping all of his work in a expandable file so I can watch his progress through the year. His handwriting makes my hand hurt. It's very tall and wide right now. But he has the hang of his words. We have to practice spelling them and writing them, but he is game for that. I'll be running copies for his teacher tomorrow and one of us will eat lunch with him next week. The complaints with the whistle continues. His teacher let me now there are 250 students at a time in the cafeteria-ACK! It might get a bit loud.

Charlotte is in the nursery and a different kid from the one I see at home. More tempestuous, dramatic and a bundle of energy. Ann seems to think some of that will wear off as she settles. I hope so, the kid at school would get on my last nerve at home. Bless the teachers for their patience and understanding of small children!

Fun things of note this week

Charlotte carried her baby doll and held it to her breast "I'm feeding my baby somne pretend milk" Ryan has a loose tooth-for real this time, it really wiggles. We went to the giant RC airplane show today. Really neat. I can imagine spending a good bit of time-and money-at Hobby Lobby in a few years. Charlotte is getting really good on her push bike. Ryan wanted us all to dress up for Lindsay's party today. He wore a button down shirt and slicked his hair down. He liked my skirt and Greg's outfit as well. He declared we all looked beautiful:)

There is a picture from Charlotte's first day at Antioch, And Ryan at the fort at the Fair at New Boston.

Today

Today Ryan didn't want to go to school because it is too long (again)--maybe not enough outside time to break up the day? and because they blow a whistle at lunchtime in the cafeteria and yell "QUIET!" He says the whistle hurts his ears (it probably does). They also blow the whistle outside, but that is less concerning to me.

I emailed the teacher asking about volunteer opportunities for parents. I wonder if they need help in the lunchroom???

I am not enjoying the morning clash of wills. Have to consider the adjustments that he needs to make the first few weeks of a new school.

In a little bit, Charlotte gets to find her cubby in the nursery and explore her room. We had the parent/teacher meet and greet Monday. I am glad Charlotte is going.

Guilt and a small wrinkle and a rant

Well, there is finally a small wrinkle. Ryan walking back from the bus stop yesterday relayed that today was his first day for math and when asked how it was, replied "terrible." He kept walking, not really bothered and when asked why it was terrible said, "because I can't make 2's". Hmmm. We came inside where I offerred to show him how to make 2's (he's made them before) but the moment had passed.

Last night after they were tucked in, Ryan came downstairs (usually it's Charlotte) and said he wanted to read another library book. When reminded it was a school night, he said he didn't want to go to school. He couldn't tell me why so I just chalked up to stalling and carried him back to bed.

Today, not long after waking, he said he didn't want to go to school because "it's too long." I told him all schools are that long. He said not the Antioch School. I pointed out their day is actually longer starting in first grade too. Then he noticed the time and quickly dressed. He started harrassing me about leaving early because he wanted to be the first one to the stop. I insisted he wait. We heard the other kids and I let him go. He ran down the street with the others. I collected Charlotte and stood on the sidewalk. Ryan had stopped and was walking back and crying. He was upset because the others ran ahead without him and he really didn't want to go to school. After some discussion, I concluded he wasn't upset about running, he was upset he was last. He has to be in front when we ride bikes and when we take walks. So, today he was last. We discussed catching the bus or me dropping me off, but he had to go to school. I walked with him the rest of the way and he calmed down. Soon he was racing the bus up the walk with the other kids. But I noticed as the kids grouped off at the other end of the walk, Ryan stood off outside the group. I wonder how long it will take for him to be in the group. These kids have gone to preschool and K together. I wondered last year when we sent him to K at Antioch.

So today I had guilt. Horrible, am I ruining his life guilt. I also know I am projecting on him because I never really fit into a group until late junior high. I was awkward all that time and so uncomfortable. I really don't fit into a group now either. I am a nurse that never has felt the calling and envy those who embrace it. Nursing for me was a means to an end. I hate my hours and being away from the kids but it has to be done. I am still a half a step off beat. I have found ways to adjust and adapt and tell myself it's okay. I tell myself this is part of what he has to learn in addition to reading and writing and wonder of there is another way to save hime from the pain. I really don't want that for him and wonder what I can do to make it easier.

And of course, I am not as welcome at his school and I miss the easy, warm and embracing culture. This isn't what I want. I have the tools to make do and the strength to take it. My little boy doesn't yet. His tears slay me because the pain isn't from a skinned knee.

The first (half) week

It's Saturday and Greg has taken the kiddos to the park for play and geocaching while I relax. I worked last night and am on for the weekend as well. School starts a week from Monday for me. Greg and I are catching up on DVDs we haven't seen. Vantage point was good as was Charlie Wilson's War. Skip Smart People. War was borderline okay, I just wanted to see Jet Li kick and Jason Stratham.

A few observations:
Charlotte as an only child-She has to be asked to do something about 5 times before she'll do it. I suspect this has always been the case but with her alone with me it is alot more noticeable--and frustrating.

Ryan already wants to walk to and from the bus stop by himself.

He likes buying lunch.

It's a long day with him gone.

He's hugging me more and is overall more affectionate.

Charlotte cannot wait for him to come home so they can play.

Yesterday he asked when wacky Wednesday was and I told him his school doesn't have that. He then related a wacky Wednesday at Antioch where Landon wore underwear around his neck and on his head. And also how he and Landon played together during one of our P/T conferences. It was all very clear in his mind and I think the first twinge of him missing the school. It was sweet to hear him talk about it. And a reminder that he does have a good memory, even when he doesn't talk about stuff.

No homework as yet from school.

He's happy.

His first day

It sounds like he managed his first day well. He made it back on the bus which is always a relief as a few neighbors shared how their children had been misplaced!! He said his teacher taught him a trick to find his classroom, to follow the smiley faces to the 100 hall. He thought that was a hoot. They sent home an agenda, essentially a spiral bound week by week calendar that's specifically designed for his grade level. Each day the teacher puts a comment/sticker in to explain how they behaved. A flyer came home for Cub Scouts too. He said he wants to buy his lunch tomorrow--nachos and cheese, a PB sandwich, carrot sticks, grahams and milk. Ryan also completed a little paper book with reading and coloring. It sounds like they have a special reading initiative where a child is assessed and assigned accordingly to a a group at his level. they can move up when they are ready. Ryan said they didn't play basketball in gym today and his recess was only 10 minutes--they combine it with lunch.

Charlotte received a letter from Ann today, her nursery teacher. She was very happy to get the mail and eager to find the sticker marking her cubby at school that Ann included with the letter. We met Aj and the kids at the rec for some pool time and lunch--an excellent day for it!

An exciting day altogether.

He's off!

Today is the day! Ryan is now at 9:10 (hopefully) in his classroom. Greg and I stayed up too late last night so I set my alarm, also knowing that on days that I need the kids to up on time, they invariably sleep in. Today was no different! The kids are usually up by 7:15--at the latest! Today I woke Ryan up at 7:45. The bus was scheduled to come at 8:25 but we were asked to be there a little early. Ryan was excited on our trip to the bus stop and luckily we weren't the only parents tagging along. The parents all knew each other but I went out of my way to say hello. There are several kids at his stop. I imagine we'll walk him until he asks us not to. He had his lunchbox and backpack. Hopefully someone will be able to help him open his applesauce and yogurt. I'll ask him when he gets home. I will be meeting the bus this afternoon--I can't wait to hear what he has to tell us! Charlotte is sad, on the walk back she started to cry, saying she missed her big brother. So we'll have some time for just us for the next few days.

Today he will be a first grader

In about 8 hours, Ryan will get on a school bus for the first time with his new backpack and lunchbox. He was so excited tonight.I imagine first grade and his new school will be an adventure for some time. He knows he has Phys Ed tomorrow and every Wed and music on Fridays. Also, Friday is pizza day. They have an online meal payment plan so I'll traverse that later.
We met his teacher Monday and Ryan explored the room. He found his hook and had to be pulled away from the books. We turned in the bags of school supplies. I am so excited for him. He is going to learn so much! He really is a little sponge. I have no worries academically--I do wonder how he if he will change being around so many different children. It is my fervent hope he keeps his sweetness and doesn't become the gun toting blowing things up destroy the world boy I meet from time to time.

Anyway, what an adventure for him.

Molly's back

For those of you who knew me in high school, this will bring back memories, for those of you who didn't, well, hopefully a chuckle. I was going back to my hotel room on lunch break and my key didn't work. I went back to the front desk where I told the nice lady my problem. She stared at me for a moment...hmmmmm...and said "Have you ever been told you look like Molly Ringwald?" Shoot me back 15 years! I told her yes, I was frequently told that in my teens especially during my permed bob haircurt phase. How funny to hear it again! Greg still doesn't see the resemblance but cracked up when I told him. I thought it was funny....

Indianapolis

We made it last night around 10 after a 2 + hour drive with potty stops. We reserved a king sized bed with a fold out couch--perfect I thought. the bed is divine, but the kids freaked out on the sofa bed--Greg said they cried after I went down to get another bag out of the car. I think it's because it's covered in crinkly plastic. So the kids And I got the bed, Greg took the sofa bed. Maybe I'll have to take the sofa tonight? I don't think anyone slept that well. Ryan was still up at 0630 after at most 6 hours of sleep--he usually gets 10 or 11. Charlotte said she would get up after her knees woke up, they didn't want her to get out of bed yet!
So I am just out of my conference--latest updats on fetal monitoring--it was pretty good with more to come tomorrow. Greg said he took the kids to the Indy Childrens museum. I am eager to hear about that-- I am waiting for them now.

BTW, after tomorrow I am on vacation from work for a week--Hooray! but not from school. My school break coincides with Ryan starting school and I didn't want to be home with him at school all day. So no plans to go anywhere exotic..just hang with the kids--which will be nice:)

I can do this!

I promised to blog about it, so here it is. A few nights ago, I was going through the channels and came across an informercial on Zumba. A couple of ladies at work have done it, the infomercial had some very convincing ladies on there--good job producers! A few women had 5 or 7 kids and looked really ripped--and they had before and after pictures. Anyway, I ordered it. It came yesterday and I tried it last night. For about an hour, they walk you through each move--I was already breaking a sweat at the end of that. I then did the 20 minute express workout. I can feel it a bit in my abs today and my left knee took a beating--I also took 600mg of motrin when I was done! But I did it and I liked it. As my form improves--there is lots of hip movement that looks really cool and is harder than it looks to do--I hope to improve my endurance so I can move around more. I have a comletely new respect for dancers. I can do this! My form isn't perfect and I couldn't hop thru every step but I did hang in there. I am a little more coordinated than I thought and the rewind button was a big help. The instructors were appropriately helpful and you didn't hate them quite so much at the end for looking as good as they do. It is a workout and I did enjoy myself.

There, blog done.

"Is a camel a mammal?"

Asked Charlotte. We went to the Cincinnati Zoo today and had a discussion about what a mammal was, and wasn't on the way. If you haven't been to the zoo in awhile (it's been a year for me) be advised that there is much construction. We passed an ornate entrance that looked nothing like the old one. Since I couldn't find another, I drove back to it and parked. The were no signs telling you where to walk, so we latched on to some others and followed them a few blocks down the street. Again, no signs, just guessing. They've added a train/tram pass and movie theater passes. The reciprocal museum pass only works for general admission. We took the train ride (it lasted about 2 minutes) to appease Ryan and then saw the cheetah run show--really great show, beautiful cats. Ryan wanted to see the polar bears, Charlotte the flamingos. We were there for 5 hours and still didn't see everything. The most interesting to me was the insect house. Now, I am not an insect person--at all. They had an earwig on display the length of my palm--several cockroaches, beetles (cool-looking)and spiders. Some scorpions and a great interactive display on tree ants. Did you know there are honey ants? The insects were great because they were behind glass. They had diving beetles--they swam under water! And one bug swam on its back. So aside from the apathetic teenaged workers and a couple of smelly houses- the Cat house really did smell like alot of pee, we had a great afternoon. I promised the kids we will go back to see the rest.

Homework

"Mommy, when can I do homework?' Ryan asks with a grin. "Do you want to do homework?" I ask. "Yes, when can I start?" So off he goes to quiet time with some Kumon books and a pencil. I am not sure what he did during quiet time but the fact that he wanted to do homeowrk was refreshing and a little funny. I hope he keeps that attitude.

Today we rode the Huffman Prairie bike trail. It was 3.5 miles long and we went to the end and back. Ryan did wonderfully on his new bike--was in front most of the time. Seeing the railroad tracks up close was truly a highlight for him. At the end of the trip we decided he needed a Camelbak. He is quite proud of the little backpack Camelbak we got him at Dicks. This is Charlotte's last season in the trailer. She rides hunched in it with her legs curled up. I imagine she'll be cycling next summer, at least a little bit.

I gave Charlotte my old Madame Alexander dolls and she really likes them. She laments about their lack of shoes--I lost them years ago. She still plays with the dollhouse in our room, the one that is 30 years old and most of the furniture is broken. I'll have to ask if she likes her new one, I still find her redoing the furniture in the old one.

Just found out that Charlotte was able to get into the Antioch nursery. I am thrilled. I really like the school and their schedule is much closer to Fairborn's schedule. Yippee!!

Charlotte's haircut

Charlotte's long wavy locks are no more. She has been asking for a haircut for several months. At first I thought it was because we got our haircut at Miss Wendy's and she felt left out. She did fuss with the knots. Over the last several weeks she had become more emphatic and sure. We discussed the cons of her hair getting cut--no more buns, ponies or braids. She chewed on that for a week and said that was okay. The final big gun was when I told her I would be sad if she got her hair cut. She reached out, patted my cheek and said "don't worry mommy, it will grow again and you'll be happy.." I swear it's true! So we made sure how she wantedit cut, like Saleh's she said (Carter's little sister). So we went to Wendy thursday and stunned her with our request. She sputtered, 'are you sure? Does Greg know, is he okay with it?" Her hair really had gotten long. Greg asked that I bring the camera and save hm a lock of hair. She had about ten inches worth, so we are donating it to Locks of Love. I thought Charlotte would balk once her ponytail was cut, but you can see she was quite happy. And she continues to be so. She really likes it now and I still double take--it really is my kid! Now she asks if I am happy and I reassure her that I am and that she is perfect however she cuts her hair!

Happy Birthday Ryan!

He's 6. Has been officially for 3 hours and 30 minutes. Got his birthday kisses several times today. Let me say thank you to everyone who came to the party--I hope it wasn't too nutty! A few years ago, it was a core group of friends and their 1 child per family. A tidy get-together. Now it's several kiddos per couple and it was a little more circus-like. However, everyone got along and Ryan really had a great time. I woke up at noon (worked until 0730 today) and about every ten minutes Ryan asked how much longer until his party. There was the marathon cleaning and shoving things into closets. Everyone came and we chowed on Monster pizza and a pirate cake. the kids played on the sandbox, Baggo ( like corn hole I guess) and some tried their hand at croquet. We also pulled out the bouncer. The pinata was a hit--it broke quite nicely with croquet mallets:) The presents were oohed and awed over--thanks to al the kids that made and signed their cards! And thank you for making the day so special for Ryan. We are blessed with fabulous friends.

It's only Saturday

And it really feels like Sunday. So I am glad we have another day home together. July 4th was great. We went to Bds Thursday with Greg's parents and some friends, we were hoping to let the kids run in the fountain but it was a bit chilly....in July. then I remember we were wearing jackets on the 4th last year. Saturday was interesting. Because Ryan is in summer t-ball, he and the other kids in YMCA programs were invited to walk in the parade. We showed up a little early to decorate bikes and found our seats along the street. While waiting, the sky held it's promise and unleashed a magnificent downpour. No thunder or lightening, just rain and more rain. The grandparents took to the car while Greg, the kids and I waited with the other kids and parents. We watched the parade and we jumped in after the DARE truck. Charlotte bugged out because of the wet and stayed with the grandparents. Ryan proudly rode his bike and managed to wave a few times--as it continued to pour. Greg and I were soaked. We collected our free frosites and lunch from Wendy's and headed home. I took a nap. We had a laid back afternoon. Greg's mom suggested we celebtrate Ryan and George's birthday since they were leaving Sunday. So she put a cute pirate cake together and presents were passed around. Ryan got an excellent Lego castle set. Legos are so different from when I was his age!

The kids were able to stay up for fireworks. We walked over to Community Park East and joined several hundred others. It was a huge crowd. They had a live band and some food stands. I guess the band started at 6. We set up our chairs and the kids put on their ear plugs. Ryan covered his ears most of the walk over. Several people were setting of fireworks around the neighborhood. After asking us for the fifteenth time what the noise was, Greg and I gave up and told him exploding cucumbers. No really, we were patient and told him just about every loud noise he heard tonight was going to be fireworks. Well, once the kids got their glow in the dark bracelets, we settled down to wait. The show started and it was a doozie. Great show, really altogether. Ryan kept his plugs in and Charlotte covered her ears. No crying or hysterics at least. Charlotte ended up in Greg's lap. But it was a beautiful show. Charlotte fell asleep in the wagon on the way home. It was nice to see the fireworks together this year.

Greg's folks fly home in the morning. We are wrestling with when and where the next visit will be. Airline prices are prohibitively expensive when you have family on the other side of the country. We did smores tonight and played BINGO and Ryan's favorite UNO. We have agreed to play until he wins a hand. I was up 5 games yesterday. Hello to all of our out of town friends--have a safe trip home!!

The floor has won

I give up, I throw in the towel. The blasted $!@#&$& floor in the basement will have new tiles put down and NO! all the adhesive isn't off and NO! I am not going to seal it. The $#&#*$ tiles are going down tomorrow and the rest of the crap will be installed this week, if Mr. Pratt can make it. Went to Home Depot to rent a floor stripper to get the rest of the $#(Q adhesive off and was told, i don't want that, I want a gel adhesive remover. Also, if the adhesive is black it may contain asbestos. Too late--and no the adhesive was white so my lungs are safe from that. Advice : Never read the directions on the can. "Use in a well- ventilated space, preferably outdoors" I am in a basement bathroom with no windows. "Avoid contact with skin--chemical burn may result" Yep, know what that feels like--baking soda killed it. "Wear protective eyewear due to fumes". The 5x5 area has been alot of work and I will not subject myself or my family to anymore caustic shit. Okay. Better now.
Greg came home from his trip early (hooray). Ryan graduated from safety village. I have film footage of him shouting every answer--he did pay attention. We went to the Air Force tattoo last night to see some of the planes flyover. We could only stay until 9--I had homework. It drew quite a crowd and we saw several planes pretty close as they flew by. I got my wish TSA tonight and am crisis call tomorrow. Must cram on homework as I work the three nights after that.
Charlotte delighted everyone by reciting back Rikki Tikki tembo's name completely and correctly after hearing it about 4 times. Wow.
My daisies are blooming. They're awesome--must plant more. June's almost gone. Yikes.

I have a new toy

I like tools. I have my own stuff (and none of it is pink) and today I have a new toy he-he-heh-heh (picture Igor making that noise and you'll get a sense of my glee). Megan and Roger lent me their power washer. I was hoping to get some of the accumulated mud off the back patio. After getting it together, getting it to start ( 3 times before I figured out there was no oil in it....ooops) I started hosing off the patio. It has pleasant pressure and the dirt moved along. THEN, at one point I dropped the nozzle close to the ground and shabaam! A whole layer of muck came up and I saw the origianl color of the paver. I mean the layer of gunk is so bad I can write my name in it...with the power washer. Well, I'm all about instant gratification (I like doing dishes and ironing for that reason) I will have a ball with the power washer. You could tell I had fun today. I was covered neck down with backsplash gunk. The retaining wall has taken on a grayish, black hue--no longer- the power washer is here!
In other news, Ryan had day 2 of safety village--crosswalks etc, I went grocery shopping and Charlotte, the girls and her cousins came over to make smores. We trialed Reeses cups (apparently Ohioans say Reeses cup weird. Do you all pronounce it Reese's cup or reessee cup? I am of the latter group.) in addition to Hershey bars. I prefer the Hershey bar just because it's a classic, thought the R cup wasn't bad. So in addition to playing with an excellent toy, I got to build a fire. Overall an excellent day.
It's nearing 2, I made a decent dent in my homework.

Night,
S.

I have great friends.

Well, it all came together. Last minute, yes, I suck. Everyone was well, I was awake. Up and at em at 1, picked up the cake at 2 and hit the grocers. Megan and AJ rounded up their broods and came to wish Charlotte a lovely birthday. My friends rock. Charlotte got awesome presents (including a dress made by Miss AJ--very cute and twirly). The cake turned out great. It was a barbie cake-three layers high and the Barbie was a real one. They wrapped her from the waist down in plastic wrap. I was scared I could cut off a limb while serving the cake!

I forgot to mention Ryan had his first tee ball practice Wednesday and he loved it! He hit the ball every time and ran the bases. He was so excited. Baseball or basketball--which has the best scholarships?

Charlotte turns 4

Happy Birthday Sweetie!! On June 19 Charlotte turned 4. We woke up early so we could go out to breakfast with daddy. We went to Mimi's cafe and the kids got their chocolate chip pancakes. Charlotte was wearing her purple "party" dress. About halfway through she started to fuss and act tired. She had complained of a sore throat the night before. We were able to get in to the doctor later in the morning. His diagnosis was strep. So we had to postpone her friend party. We'll try for that Friday. We had our family party and had a great time. She perked up after her motrin and antibiotic--no fever:) The cake shop is holding her cake for her friend party. So Greg and the kids baked and frosted one. The kids decorated it with sprinkles and it tasted wonderful. Ryan was so sweet and attentive. He was very polite, saying "excuse me" and "here you go , Sis". He was an angel. We are looking forward to our get together with friends today. We were considering a push bike for her. The wooden one she has has been through two kids and is pretty much shot. We found one in Kettering (for less than a hundred dollars, most are over 200), but she was too tall for it. The lady there suggested we take off the pedals on her regular bike. So, off came the training wheels, pedals and crank. She still prefers the wooden one:)

Root beer floats

Home for Saturday and Sunday, back to work Monday. Our half bath off the garage has a working sink and toilet (yea!) Greg is trying to install the light now. We can't find a stud to mount it on. Another hiccup in the scheme of things. We need to get a mirror and other wall fixtures. It is coming together slowly, but it does look nice. Charlotte is running across the house to use that bathroom because "it's pretty." Greg's parents are here tomorrow evening and their bathroom still has a cement floor that needs sanding..don't ask. Father's Day is tomorrow and we have been invited to a cookout with my friend Rachel's family. Father's day and Charlotte's birthday have fallen during a very hectic time. We managed to get her some neat presents and will probably have a pretty princess party at home with a few close friends (and grandma and Grandpa).

Today DLM had root beer floats. So we all went down. the kids loved the floats, not the root beer "too spicy". We recently discovered Ryan likes hard boiled eggs. He saw me throwing some in my salad at the salad bar and asked to try one. This is how he discovers most food he likes. Next...deviled eggs:) I love summertime. Gives us an excuse to roast marshmallows and hot dogs. Play baseball and frisbee and just overall have a good time with the kids. The butterflies have been ordered and I am looking forward to the kids watching them while the grandparents are here. We also are planning trips to Kings Island and canoing. I really want to take the kids fishing.
Ryan has learned Go Fish, Old Maid and most recently, UNO. He likes to deal and I love watching him play. He is showing more interest in books. He is plowing through Box 3 of the Bob books and is quite proud of himself.

The heartache is getting worse. They are so cool right now, I don't really want another baby, but love the age they are now. I could go through another baby to get here again. Alas, the last pack and play is gone,as are the diaper bags and crib. We have very sound and logical reasons to be done, but oh, the ache.

King's Island

Today we went, I slept until 11 after working last night and we hit the road. We were there by 1. The first stop was the train, of course. We also discovered we have not 1 but 2 kids that LOVE roller coasters. There was 1 ride al least that I thought they wouldn't like, you had to lay on your belly and they flew you around in a circle. Charlotte loved it! I had my arm on her the whole time. Since we all rode, we didn't get a picture of that. We had a great day. It wasn't too crowded, often a short wait if any wait at all. Definitely jacket weather. When the wind kicked up, it cooled off. The kids got their faces painted.

Lies and railroad spikes

Yes, I know, an odd title.
Something magic happened to day, something funny happened today (maybe 2 funnies) and something scary. First, the magic. I went to pick Ryan and Kaylynn up from school. Charlotte and Kaylynn played on the teeter-totter-Charlotte was so happy to have a another kid on it instead of Mom, I was looking through a book and I glanced up to see Ryan running with 2 other kids, full throttle across the grassy field. In that moment, I know I captured in my mind the absolute perfect essence of my child. It hit me that he was perfectly happy, part of a group and in his world (no Mom telling him he had 5 minutes, no restraints). I also realized how comfortable he was in a place that wasn't home. I realized how much I wanted that childhood for him and was happy for a moment that he was having it.
Okay, first funny. Ryan lied today. A pre-planned and executed lie. He probably wouldn't have been caught except for 1 strategic misstep. We made cupcakes yesterday. daisy cupcakes with yellow frosting, marshmallows and jelly bean centers (and they are good). The kids poked at dinner and because I wanted them to have a little more nutrition than grilled chicken, I pulled out and cut up a pear they had chosen. Charlotte inhaled hers (it was good) but Ryan fudged, hemmed and hawed and took 2 bites. Greg and I began clearing the table. While we were both in the kitchen, Ryan announces (from the living room) that he finished his pear. I walk out to the dining room and he is still standing in the living room. Keep in mind he was at the table a few minutes before with several minutes of pear eating in front of him. I asked him where it was and he said he ate it. We went round like this 2 more times and the DADDY (yes, caps) came out and looked very stern. I asked Ryan if he put it in the trash upstairs, no mommy. Greg said "show it to me now. 5, 4 ,3, 2 ,1. (the counting down still works). And Ryan scampered upstairs and showed us the uneaten pear in the trash. So I had a true parenting moment where you can choose 1 of 2 paths. the irate, yelling or the philospohical, mellow one. In truth I was astounded and a teeny bit proud of his planning and audacity. So I chose mellow. (I was giggling like a fool inside). So Ryan and I went to a separate room and had a serious eyeball to eyeball talk about what a lie was and go through how what he had done was lying. He figured I would be upset about his not eating the pear. He cried like his heart was breaking when I told him gently that there would be no cupcake tonight, "but I really want it" he cried. I asked him to go lie down, and he did, bawling like I had run over his dog the whole time.
The other funny is how Ryan announced to his class that Miss Charlotte was having a baby. What I wouldn't have paid to be there! She was cool and took it in stride. Apparently there were lots of questions and she thought it was hilarious how quickly the news spread to the other classes (minutes).
Now, the scary. After much bawling and realizing we had 2 hours before bedtime, plus it was cold and rainy out, we were at loose ends about what to do until bedtime. I remembered the skating rink (the kids want to skate in the garage every day). Greg was game.
So after we asked the kids if they wanted to go, and Ryan's cries literally hiccupped to a stop in seconds, we were off. Driving over the bridge on Maple I looked up and noticed something coming down from about 20 feet above the bridge. it had a streamer and I thought, "Oh. someone is shooting off a model rocket and what a stupid place to do that" It came from beside and below us. and landed 15 feet in front of the car with a clang. It was a railroad spike with a streamer on it. It had been thrown (I would imagine like the kids who threw rocks down on the interstate). Greg called the police who took report over the phone. And we went on to skate. It wasn't until we were almost to the rink that I realized how bad it could have been. The weight and velocity of it would have broken the windshield, or Greg's window, or Charlotte's window. And imagining the damage to them had me shaking. I mentioned it to Greg and he said to stop thinking. He said had it landed any closer he wouldn't have waited for me to stop the car before he jumped out and chased someone down. How awful, how irresponsible. My hands are shaking as I type this. The kids being in the car was the only thing that didn't have me turning around and going back. I may reconsider wearing my Birkenstocks. I can't run in them and I really wanted to run tonight.

We called the police back later, and they said the spike was gone before they got there. The little shits.
So it was a full day.

Hugs,
Sara

So be careful.

Greg went to the zoo and I went purse shopping

I'm not a purse hog or anything. These last few years of slight frugality have curbed my desire to collect more stuff (except some books!) My quilting material collection and Boyd Bear collections lay there, waiting, nothing new to add. And purses, well, let's just say I love to look, but I do have a few diehard favorites. For the second year, Megan and I made the trek to Fort Wayne to ogle the Vera Bradley outlet sale. Last year rocked. They had some great deals. Also, since Megan and I live a city or 2 apart now and both have bizarre schedules, our time together is very very limited. We talk to each other almost daily, usually on our commutes to work. So it was with pleasure that I looked forward to today. We had a few hours in the car trip up and back and we got to touch all the different bags and stuff. We bought a few things for ourselves, Megan stockpiled for Christmas, I picked up stuff for girls at work. The sales weren't as awesome this year, the crowd not quite as massive, but I got to talk to my friend (and nap in her car.)
Greg went to the zoo. Ryan's class went to the Columbus Zoo. Greg and the kids hitched a ride with Charlotte and her girls. All told, everyone had fun. I can't wait to see the pictures.
Greg and I are coming to the slow realization that spending time with our kids at events by ourselves is something we need to do. With our work schedules and our friends commitments, we want to see them, so usually we plan to go somewhere and invite others along. We hope to get some quality time with friends, but are usually distracted, so no real visiting gets done anyway. We are tentatively planning a canoe trip Sunday (weather permitting) If that's a no-go, we will take a family trip to Ikea!

It's 80

It's only 80 and we are getting hot outside. Maybe it's the way the sun hits the yard? Ryan is already pink over his arms, neck and face despite a liberal application of sunscreen every day. Hopefully he wears his hat at school. I worked last night and dozed on the couch this morning while waiting for Greg to take the kids to school and the sitters. They watched their fair share of Disney today. I slept hard until he brought them home after 3. Tonight I have been cancelled so I will get to see Ryan's game tomorrow and go to Carillon for our first train ride of the season. Greg mentioned we have to renew memberships to our various summer haunts and get our hands on the festival schedule for the summer.
I am getting more sad as we head into May. It just seems like this school year has flown. There were a few times I didn't care for the hassle of driving out to Ryan's school every day but he has done so well. I feel like I am sacrificing part of his growth by having him in public school next year because it is financially impossible for us otherwise and we'll have the advantage of it being more convenient. I'd rather drive everyday and know he is in such a rich environment. But he will do well next year at Fairborn. Charlotte will have a geat time at the Jewish Center.

My friend is moving

Today i found out my friend Charlotte's husband has accepted a job in North Carolina. He starts mid-May. Charlotte and the girls will stay here thru August so she can finish up school. I told Ryan and Charlotte tonight. Ryan became tearful and said, "I won't see my friend ever again?" I reassured him we would see them all summer, "But then they'll be gone?" So he pondered this for a bit. Charlotte was worried about who was going to take her to Shelleys. I told her that she was going back to her preschool and she said Miss AJ knows how to get to the preschool so I had to call her and let her know. I told her Daddy or I would be taking her and Miss AJ would get her from time to time. Ryan wanted to know where NC was so we pointed it out on the map. He said' that's 10 hours away! We should fly there." I told them we could go visit and he wanted to know when. I told him that they needed to find a house and get settled and we needed to wait for an invitation. He thought about this and decided we needed to move there. I told him we can't move for 3 years. He did the math and figured out how old everyone will be. He wanted to know where in NC and I said I didn't know. He said "In 3 years we can move there" I said "To NC?", "Yes" he replied. "In the same town as Kristin and Kaylynn?" He smiled and said, "Yes, we can walk down the street, knock on the door, they'll open and there we will be!"

Beautiful day

This is my third night in a three night stetch and today was the prettiest day we've had so far. It was a crime to stay inside. Greg had the kids while I slept then he took them to Max's birthday party. I woke up to an empty house and a few hours to my self--a gift! Went for a walk after getting breakfast (at 3pm) at Panera--I also finished Book 3 of Harry Potter. Missed seeing the kids.
Currently Ryan is planning a trip to Colorado with Henry (Charlotte D can go if she drives). He is still mesmerized by volcanoes and has lots of questions about how far things are on a map. I found him an atlas to take in the car. He also asks alot of questions about adding numbers. I have to register him for school this week.
Charlotte continues to take things apart and carry parts of things in purses (puzzle pieces, jacks, cards etc) and she likes to have picnics and make food. She is such an affectionate child. She says, "Mommy, I forgot to give you something..." I ask what and she crawl into my lap and gives me a hug and a kiss. She also likes to climb on our shuolders when we are on the computer, lean over and kiss us. Ahh, does she have to grow up? She is becoming more comfortable on her bike--especially using the brakes. She still gets off and walks her bike on downhills.
Ryan has a skateboard, pads and helmet. He's loving it. Greg tells me he wants Star Wars Legos for his birthday.

We know where the Urgent Care is

Yup, we found it, twice. Greg's mom had to go early Monday morning. She's doing better know. We took Charlotte Monday afternoon after her third pee accident of the day. She had been having 2 or more a day since we left home. She didn't have a fever or pain, but she did have frequency. I was able to get a clean catch at the office (thank god). The sample came back negative for a bladder infection but the doctor wanted to send it for a culture. My FP called back yesterday (I had called him first) and he wanted to make sure a culture had been sent. the Urgent Care just called and said the culture was negative--otherwise she would have to have had several tests done. So, what do we chalk it up to? regression, stress?
Ryan loves the indoor pool, I wish I did. He turns blue after 5 minutes in it. He wants to go all the time. the jacuzzi is very warm, almost hot. He's jumping off the side of the pool now. He no longer wants to live in Alaska, but Indiana--apparently they don't have volcanoes.
We hit the outlet mall about 5 miles away. Ryan can no longer wear slims. He's a 6regular with the waist adjuster pulled in abit. Charlotte is a solid 4 regular. I love the Osh Kosh outlet...
Found a winter down coat at Eddie Bauer for $50 and microfleece pullovers for $8. Love it, love it. Not having wireless in the room really sucks.

Warm Today

Today it finally cracked into the 70s. It felt so good taking off a layer. We drove out to the Jamestown Settlement today and wandered around the fort and over the three ships they had at port. Ryan was thrilled to see the rigging and play with the tiller. There were lots of school groups so it was crowded. But they sky was blue and the sun was shining. The fort was a hit. We saw several types of buildings, Ryan saw a old school and church as well as straw beds which Charlotte called "scarecrow beds". She like being on the ships too, but didn't like the dark spaces in the holds. We also went to Yorktown and saw the earth works where the soldiers built hills and valleys against the British. I could live here. there is so much history and I am such a dunce with it. I can't wait to bring the kids back when they are ready for it. I remember as a kid being taken to museum after museum and being bored out of my mind. Now all I want to do is stop and read everything, and the kids just want to climb hills and look at the water, boats and flowers.
I learned how sailors figured out their speed today. The used a 30 second timer and a long rope that had a knot every 42 feet. They put a weighted end of the rope in the water, started the 30 second hourglass and counted knots as the rope was pulled off a reel. there is a mathematical correlation to those nmbers but I forget the innards of that. it was just cool learning where the term "knots" for speed came from.

We're on Vacation

This phrase was repeated several times yesterday. Overall trip was a little over 10 hours. We left Fairborn after stops at Blockbuster (almost late DVD), Fairborn library (would have been late books), Tim Hortons (Mom skipped breakfast) and the Dungans (had to drop off blanket). We were up until 1 am Friday packing and sorting and tidying as people would be in our house to make sure the cat lived. So we launched at 10am. The GPS was programmed, Greg had an atlas (just in case) and we had about 300 punds of stuff lodged into the van. We had every portable electronic device we owned in the car and sorted. Our first official stop was a rest area where I quickly figured out what I had forgotten. It wasn't my contacts (usually is) or a hairbrush. As the winds blew us into the bathroom, I realized I forgot a coat. Greg had 2, the kids each had one. Go figure. We were an hour out. I drove most of the way and Greg fiddled with the GPS. He hasn't had as much time to play with it as I have. Then he noticed a discrepancy. When our final destination was programmed, it said we were 429 miles away at our house. When he added up the turn by turn, it came to 575. After consulting the atlas, he realized this was true. Oh crap. We just added at least an hour and a half to our trip. Also discovered something annoying to me about the GPS. It gives you an estimated arrival time. I found as I tried to move a little faster, this arrival time didn't budge. This was annoying to a competitive person like me. When we gained, say, 15 minutes, it was time to stop for food or the bathroom. This got worse as the day progressed and it really started to stress me out. We realized an hour away that we wouldn't make it to Norfolk to get Greg's parents. This was disheartening, but they were troopers and rented a car. They were literally 10 minuted behind us to the condo.
A word on traveling with the kids, they were great. My butt was numb by the end but they held on. They were looney for the last hour and Greg was almost ginding his teeth but he agreed the kids did great. A blooper occurred at a great little stop (that I did save in the GPS) Very clean BR, huge beverage and snack collection. Anyway, at some point I napped and Greg drove. I woke up when Greg pulled to a stop and nudged me saying Charlotte had to go to the bathroom. We went in and she changed her mind when she saw the automatic flush. Now she had used one earlier in the day without a blink (hooray, major accomplishment) but now she was more tired. So no go and I informed her that when we stopped at her request, she needed to at least try. Back out to the car. Climbed over luggage and they sat. We were opening our snacks when Charlotte cries "I peed my seat" and sure enough, she had. So eveybody out, seat out, pants off, bottom wiped, huge suitcase open for clean clothes while Mom goes back in to rinse and find a plastic bag. Done. On our way. Three miles later Charlotte cries, "I have to poop!" Well her parents are not complete idiots and we have the emergency potty seat so Greg pulls off at the next ramp. She does her business. We go to get back on the highway and Greg can't find an entrance for I-64 East, just West. the GPS points the way. It take us a few minutes to wonder about the one lane road in the holler and that our trip time just went up by 40 minutes. Zipping thru the turns on the Garmin and I see we are heading for a turnaround--20 miles away. Bur Greg didn't lose it. When he started to shake, we hear a voice from the back "Daddy, do you think Mommy should drive" at which point greg laughs like a loon because even the 5 year old figures that we had a little better luck with me at the wheel.
